Stonehenge is a well known English heritage site located in Southern United Kingdom. It is located West of London and it is about 2 hours away by taking train and bus. Stonehenge is one of the most popular tourist attraction in England if not the most popular. Study on Stonehenge has shown that it was build 3000BC by the Celtics. It is definitely one of the place to visit when taking a vacation to United Kingdom.
Getting to Stonehenge by bus and train was not an easy task. We departed from Waterloo Station in London. We bought a Southwest train ticket to go to Salisbury. The train ride to Salisbury took about an hour and we arrived at around 9AM. We then headed outside of the station and turned left to get to where the Stonehenge tour bus was at. The tour bus would take us to Stonehenge directly. The tour bus was a double deck bus and it had talks about Stonehenge while we were on the way to there on the bus.
It took about 30 minutes for the bus to get to the Stonehenge site, but there was no site of Stonehenge. Apparently the Stonehenge was still 2 miles away. We were just at the visitor center. To get to where Stonehenge is at, we can either walk 2 miles to get there, or take bus there. We ended up lining up to take the bus there. The line moved very quickly since there were many buses taking the tourists to there.
After 5 minutes of ride in a super crowded bus, we finally got to Stonehenge. The rock seemed larger than what we were expecting. The path on the out skirt of Stonehenge allow tourists to walk around and take photos from different angles. We were told that tourists used to be able to enter Stonehenge, but many tourists leave mark on the stones and damaged the stones. Thus tourists are no longer allowed to enter Stonehenge.
We walked around the path and checked out Stonehenge from each angle. It seemed that the government was trying to keep the grass green and was watering the grass with a lot of sprinklers.
We did not spend much time at Stonehenge because there was really not much else to see. There were other hiking path the lead into the grass field where the sheep were, but we did not bother since there was still not much to see.
We went back to the visitor center and checked out the exhibition there to understand the history of Stonehenge. There were also replicas of Celtics house. There was also a huge stone there for people to try to pull to see if they could move the stone.
In general, Stonehenge is like a place where you mark off on the check list. There is really nothing else to see and it really takers a long time to get there. We don't recommend to come all the way here if there are other higher priority tasks to do.
