Alesund is a small city located on the West coast of Norway and it is a popular cruise destination. Alesund is very popular for tourists because it is close to many popular tourist attractions in Norway such as Atlantic Ocean Road and Trollstigen. When we wanted to book a hotel room at Alesund, it was difficult for us to find a room because the hotel rooms are often fully booked by all the tourist groups.
We stayed at Scandic Alesund when we were here. The room at Scandic Alesund was quite big, so we were happy about it. The issue we had was that the hotel only had limited parking space. This hotel does have indoor parking garage, but it is extremely small. Our rental car was an SUV and we could barely drive into the garage. Then we realized that the parking space is too small for the SUV to fit, we had to make a 3 point turn to get out. Due to the garage space being so small, we had to do 3 point turn like 10 times to get out of the parking garage. It was a nightmare. Luckily we were able to find street parking that was free from 4PM to 8AM. Since we know that we would go out before 8AM and get back after 4PM, that was perfect for us.
The iconic view of Alesund is from the top of mountain at Byrampen view point. It is accessible by car, but also walkable to there. The hike is through a stair case that has 481 steps. Since we were hikers, we hiked 481 steps to get there and it took us about 10 minutes. It was quite easy and it did tell us how many steps that we have completed. From the top, we could see the entire city of Alesund. It was amazing.
Alesund also has unique building structure along its river with colorful scheme. On a calm morning, the water reflects off the gorgeous color of the building on the water surface. It was just so pretty to see.
Overall, Alesund is a great place to stay as a hub to travel to the surrounding tourist attractions. It is also very accessible by plane and although the airport is small, it has a rather large cafeteria. Parking was the only problem we had but we were always lucky to find a parking space.
