Ramen Ryoma is a warm family oriented Japanese restaurant that mainly sells Japanese ramen. It is located close to downtown Beaverton and just beside Uwajimaya Japanese supermarket. Ryoma in Japanese means dragon horse. As you can see from the photo below, the banner of the restaurant has a drawing of an animal that looks like a horse, but it has the head of a dragon. There are also 2 Chinese characters on the banner that says dragon horse. Ramen Ryoma's current restaurant location used to be a Thai restaurant. The Thai restaurant did not attract much customers even though there is a lot of people doing grocery shopping at Uwajimaya supermarket. Thus the Thai restaurant closed down and the new restaurant is Ramen Ryoma. Ramen Ryoma seems to be rather well and had a waiting list.
When we got to Ramen Ryoma, the first thing we did is to put down our name on the waiting list. There are several seats at the entrance for people to sit on while waiting, or we just did a walk in Uwajimaya supermarket while waiting for our table to be ready. After around 15 minutes, our table is ready and the server took us to our table. One thing I would like to mention is that there is a large table at the center of the restaurant for large party of people. However, when the restaurant is really packed, the server may offer you to sit at the large table. This means that you might share the table with other people. It is not too big of a deal for me, but some people may not like it. If the server does offer this option, it does not mean you have to take it. You can decline the offer and wait for your own private table.
Ramen Ryoma offers ramen in 3 different soup base. This includes miso, salt, and soy sauce. This time we ordered a basic ramen with miso soup base and a deluxe ramen with miso soup base.
Around 5 minutes later, the ramen is ready and brought to the table. The basic ramen is more plain. It has 1 piece of seaweed, 1 piece of Chasu pork, bean sprouts and green onions. This met our expectation. The miso soup base was amazing however. Unlike regular miso soup, the miso soup base used at Ramen Ryoma has a lot more flavor. It is not like any plain miso soup. It is likely that pork was added as part of miso soup base making process. The ramen noodle is quite chewy. The ramen noodle did not feel like it's over boiled and thus Ramen Ryoma did a great job on this.
The deluxe ramen has a lot more stuff on it compared to basic ramen. Instead of 1 piece of seaweed, it has 3 pieces of seaweed. Instead of 1 piece of Chasu pork, it has 3 pieces of Chasu pork. On top of bean sprout and green onions, it also comes with an egg. The addition of all these ingredients make the ramen look more appealing. The deluxe ramen was also upgraded to large size. One downside is that although ramen is added to large size, I do not think more soup was added.
Overall, Ramen Ryoma offers great Japanese ramen experience. Other than offering basic size and large size, it also has super large size at additional cost if you are very hungry. I have not tried salt soup base and soy sauce soup base, but miso soup base looks the best on the photo. One major down fall is that Ramen Ryoma does not put a lot of soup in the bowl which I think this is something that needs to be improved upon.
